A little bit about Bead for Life:

The event is an exciting opportunity to learn more about and support impoverished Ugandan women who are lifting their families out of poverty with their handmade, high-quality beaded jewelry, featured on NBC Nightly News, in O Magazine, Vanity Fair,  Family Circle and other publications.

The event will also feature drink specials and teeshirts for sale to raise more donations. The teeshirts can be decorated and “graffitied” at the event says Jessi Marquez.

BeadforLife is a socially responsible global organization, working with women, all of whom were living on less than $1 a day in extreme poverty.  Like extremely poor people worldwide our members have experienced many sorrows and difficulties.  Yet they remain strong, resilient, and hopeful for a better life.  Based in North America and Uganda, BFL has partnered with industrious women who make vivid beaded jewelry out of recycled paper.  The 300 members of BFL support almost 5,000 others to climb out of poverty.

“BeadforLife’s philosophy is that people want jobs rather than handouts.  We focus on ways for people to leave poverty behind forever,” says BFL Co- Director Devin Hibbard.  “The beaders are incredibly hardworking, and every dollar they make goes into critical things, like sending children to school, paying for health care, and saving to build a home.”

The beaders’ work has been sold at thousands of home parties and businesses and community-sponsored events around the world. All net profits from BFL sales are invested in projects that fight extreme poverty, primarily in three key areas: health, affordable housing, and vocational training for impoverished youth, and entrepreneurial development through micro credit for small businesses.

Toms Shoes

ONE FOR ONE

TOMS Shoes was founded on a simple premise: With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for One. Using the purchasing power of individuals to benefit the greater good is what we're all about.

OUR STORY

In 2006 an American traveler, Blake Mycoskie, befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by caring TOMS customers.

Since our beginning, TOMS has given over 150,000* pairs of shoes to children in need through the One for One model. Because of your support, TOMS plans to give over 300,000 pairs of shoes to children in need around the world in 2009.

Our ongoing community events and Shoe Drop Tours allow TOMS supporters and enthusiasts to be part of our One for One movement. Join us.

WHY SHOES?

Most children in developing countries grow up barefoot. Whether at play, doing chores or just getting around, these children are at risk.

Walking is often the primary mode of transportation in developing countries. Children can walk for miles to get food, water, shelter and medical help. Wearing shoes literally enables them to walk distances that aren't possible barefoot.

Wearing shoes prevents feet from getting cuts and sores on unsafe roads and from contaminated soil. Not only are these injuries painful, they also are dangerous when wounds become infected. The leading cause of disease in developing countries is soil-transmitted parasites which penetrate the skin through open sores. Wearing shoes can prevent this and the risk of amputation.

Many times children can't attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of their uniform. If they don't have shoes, they don't go to school. If they don't receive an education, they don't have the opportunity to realize their potential.

There is one simple solution...SHOES.

Of the planet's six billion people, four billion live in conditions inconceivable to many. Lets take a step towards a better tomorrow.

Most memorable moments of Glamours Women of the Year awards

Holiday Gift Ideas

You can get this at Sephora.com

Glamours Women of the Year awards was one of the most inspirational nights

Last night I had the honor to help out at the Glamour Magazine Women of the Year awards. It was one of the most inspirational nights of my life. The entire audience clapped and cried during the speeches of these amazing women.

Even for a venue as grand as New York's Carnegie Hall, there was a pretty dazzling concentration of star power at Glamour magazine's Women of the Year awards.

Pop star Rihanna was there, in the most body-hugging of gowns.
Tennis star Serena Williams was there, too, in a bright red, one-shoulder number. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones were presenters; so were Katie Couric and former President Bill Clinton.

And there were not one but three Beatle wives.

But the biggest ovation at Monday evening's award ceremony went to the 81-year-old poet Maya Angelou, whose soaring words on the power of womanhood brought many to tears and nearly everyone to their feet.

Women, Angelou told the crowd in her speech, "are rainbows in the clouds."

"I am grateful to be a woman," said Angelou, who won the lifetime achievement award. "I must have done something great in another life." As for the men: "You have to write your own poem," the poet said to laughter, including from Clinton, the man who had called upon her to recite poetry at his inauguration.

The annual Glamour Women of the Year awards always honor a group of eclectic women, and this year was no exception.

One of the evening's most emotional moments was the award to pediatrician Jane Aronson, who works to better the lives of orphans overseas and founded the Worldwide Orphans Foundation.

She was in tears after Couric introduced her, even more so when surprised onstage by a group of her "kids," children from foreign countries, now adopted by American families.

"You know I've never had a surprise party," she said. "Until tonight."

She got a standing ovation, as did the Iranian women of the One Million Signatures Campaign, introduced by CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour. The women are working toward gender equality in Iran.

Model Iman, who presented Rihanna's award, referred to the singer's ordeal early this year, when she was assaulted by boyfriend and fellow singer Chris Brown. Rihanna initially returned to Brown but said last week that she regrets it, because it sent the wrong message to her fans. Brown has pleaded guilty to felony assault.

"Now I am even more impressed with her dignity and courage," Iman said, noting that Rihanna would serve as a role model to victims of domestic violence.

Other honorees recently in the headlines were Laura Ling and Euna Lee, the American TV journalists who were arrested in North Korea and sentenced to 12 years hard labor after briefly crossing the border from China.

They were pardoned in early August after a trip to Pyongyang by Clinton, who also mentioned the ordeal in his remarks, calling the day of their release one of the happiest of his life.

Also honored was fashion designer Stella McCartney. Her dad, Paul McCartney, wasn't there, but Stella was shocked to see three Beatle wives presenting her award: Yoko Ono, widow of John Lennon; Olivia Harrison, widow of George; and Ringo Starr's wife, Barbara Starkey. ( read more here)

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

I will be leaving the country for a year on January 1, 2010. I am going on the World Race through an organization called Adventures in Missions. I will be traveling to 11 different countries over 11 months to spread hope and love, and genuinely serve people right where they are! I will be leaving the comforts of home and abandoning a traditional lifestyle to live in a tent with a backpack! I will be doing a variety of things including working in various orphanages and working to stop human trafficking!

If you would like to follow me on my journey, I will be updating my blog in the coming months before I leave, as well as throughout my trip: www.Jessimarquez.com

Please subscribe and get an alert each time I post something new!

In order for me to embark on this trip I need your prayers and support! Your prayers would be greatly appreciated as I prepare for this trip! I have to raise at least $16,000 which covers my travel, food, lodging, etc throughout the year I'll be gone.
Thanks so much!

The Yankee Donut

Mark Isreal, whose wild imagination drives the Doughnut Plant on the Lower East Side, has come up with an irresistible new delicacy, a crème brûlée doughnut. It’s bursting with rich custard and topped with shiny, crackling toasted sugar.

“I first made the vanilla cream a year ago,” Mr. Isreal said. “But everyone makes a doughnut with vanilla cream and I wanted to do something different.”

So after three months of work he is content with this creation. He hand-pipes cream into the doughnut, sugars the top and takes a blowtorch to it for the glaze.

They are $2.75 each, only at his store: 379 Grand Street (Essex Street), (212) 505-3700. (Other varieties can be found at places like Gourmet Garage), NY TIMES
