Southside celebrates a birthday

To pack in fickle New York crowds, clubs have to reinvent themselves. Even if a venue appears to be going strong (as Bella’s did when it became Southside last fall), overhauls are not unheard of. Still, as much as nightspots like to shed their own pasts, they often look back in time for inspiration. And so Southside mimicked the palm fronds and reservation policy of Bungalow 8, which itself recalled the tropical motif ofIndochine, the cokey ’80s celeb magnet (who are celebrating their own 25th Anniversary with a party tonight at Bergdorfs). And of course, Bella’s was widely seen as a downtown satellite of pearl and pastel-friendly Dorrian’s.

In their race to avoid becoming cliches, club owners constantly rely on a big one: everything old is new again.

HALLOWEEN Q& A
ARTIST’S NAME: Luc B., M∙A∙C Senior Artist
LOCATION: New York City
STARTED 1984
ODD HABITS: Humming while doing makeup.
FUN FACTS: If there is a dog in the room, I ignore people in favour of the dog!

Q: What’s so special about Halloween?
A: Halloween is exhilarating makeup time! It’s the time of year when you can let all your alter egos come out! Whether your thing is drag, scary monsters or celebrity impersonations, just have fun!

Q: What are you planning to be for Halloween?
A: I don’t dress up! I just love watching all the action in the streets. I live in the East Village in New York, and the fun part is just watching everybody come out and play. Even if sometimes it’s hard to tell if it’s a Halloween look or just a colourful neighbour.

Q: What are the products you most often use during Halloween?
A: I would say I love M∙A∙C Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer as a base. That way, you basically have a blank canvas and you can create anything you want. Also, all the M∙A∙C Pro Lipmix colours are great if you want very rich, creamy colours that will make a statement. Prep + Prime finishing powder can set anything into place and make it last all night.

Q: What’s the most difficult look you have ever achieved with makeup?
A: Last year, my M∙A∙C Halloween video look was some sort of a water creature. It was very challenging for me, because it was about recreating the illusion of movement with shine and shapes.

Q: What is your biggest piece of advice to all M·A·C fans as they get ready for Halloween?
A: Prepare in advance. Start researching what you want to do so you can gather as much info as possible, and then practice your look at least once. That way you can see what works and what needs to be fixed. Remember, you can always just go to your favourite M∙A∙C counter and ask for help.

Q: Of all the Halloween makeup looks you have ever done, which is your favourite?
A: The last one that I have done is always my favourite!

Be Barbie for Halloween

A Cute and Sexy Halloween Makeup Idea

If you’ve been following our big Halloween costume debate over on Glamour.com, you know that most of us fall into one of two costume camps: We go either super-cute or hella-sexy. But I’ve got a costume idea that will work on both sides of the style divide: Barbie! There was a ton of Barbie beauty inspiration on the fall runways this season since Babs celebrated the 5-0 this year—and to think, thanks to the plastic skin, faux hair and saucer-size eyes of hers, she doesn’t look a day over 21! To DIY Barbie’s signature über-feminine beauty look—the kind Paris Hilton always seems to be sporting—celebrity makeup artist Brett Freedman suggests starting with your eyes. “Dust silver shadow over the whole lid from lashes to brows and add an extra dab to the inner corners, right by the tear duct. Add a sweep of a purple-gray shadow to the crease of the eyelid, then use a felt-tip eyeliner and lightly dot on the lid, staying as close as possible to the lash line. Go back over the lid once more, and this time, press the felt tip firmly onto the skin to ‘connect the dots,’ fanning the line up and out toward the temples on the ends.” Finish off your pastel eye makeup look with bright pink cheeks and lips. Slip on a tight bubblegum-pink minidress and your night of trick-or-treating will be extra sweet. - GLAMOUR MAGAZINE

Maroni's Cuisine is heaven in your mouth

In the quaint little village of Northport Long Island, there is a hidden gem for the taste buds. I would define myself as a "foodie" and can admit to trying nearly every great restaurant in New York City. However, when I really want to give myself a treat...I take the Long Island Rail Road to Maroni Cuisine.

Many of you have probably heard me rant and rave about how amazing the food is here. This surprising yet delectable tasting menu literally keeps me on the edge of my seat!
The warm staff and laid back atmosphere add to this already amazing experience. The background music is a pleasant mix of Pearl Jam and The Beatles. You will often hear the Owner and Chef Mike Maroni laughing with one of the tables ( yes, you feel right at home here)! The never ending glass of wine compliments the assortment of tantalizing flavors. Maroni's is 100% quality and does not compromise itself by saving a few pennies. The crab will make your mouth water and the dessert made me as happy as a 6 year old.
Don't believe me? Zagats rated Maroni's food a 28!!

Whenever I have the treat to visit my favorite dining spot, I always remember to bring home a pot of their famous meatballs! Famous? YUP! These meatballs beat BOBBY FLAY-Click here for video!

I can go on and on, but I am getting really hungry thinking about all the great food! Please feel free to read more reviews here...and thank me later for helping you find your favorite restaurant!

Bead for life helps women in Uganda

Beads for Life Jewelry

BeadforLife eradicates extreme poverty by creating bridges of understanding
between impoverished Africans and concerned world citizens.
Ugandan women turn colorful recycled paper into beautiful beads, and people who care open their hearts, homes and communities to buy and sell the beads.

The beads thus become income, food, medicine, school fees and hope.
It is a small miracle that enriches us all.

All profits from BeadforLife are invested in community development
projects that help people work their way out of poverty.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The National Breast Cancer Foundation estimates that each year, over 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,000 die. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year.

If detected early, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer exceeds 96%. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram.

The National Cancer Institute and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend that women in their forties and older have mammograms every one to two years. A complete early detection plan also includes regular clinical breast examinations by a trained medical professional. Monthly breast self-exams are suggested in addition.
